Domain Name System, or DNS, is a tool for locating websites. The computer is illiterate in all languages that people can understand. as it only understands the binary numbers 0 and 1. Each and every server had a different IP address, and users could reach the server using those IP addresses.

An IP address has the following format: 157.245.106.40, which consists of four sets of numbers with a range of 0 to 255. It’s not exactly convenient to memorize this long string of numbers when you want to access a website, which is why DNS can be useful. You can thus remember kongunadu.ac.in rather than 157.245.106.40.

Domain Hierarchy

TLD (Top-Level Domain)

A TLD is the most right hand part of a domain name. So, for example, the www.google.com TLD is .com. There are two types of TLD, gTLD (Generic Top Level) and ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain)

A generic top-level domain (gTLD) was formerly intended to inform the user of the purpose of the domain name; for instance, a.com would be for commercial purposes,.org for an organization,.edu for education, and.gov for government. Additionally, a country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD) was utilized, such as.ca for websites situated in Canada,.co.uk for websites based in the United Kingdom, and so forth.

Second-Level Domain

consider kongunadu.ac.in ,kongunadu is an second level domain in it.The second-level domain can only have 63 characters, including the TLD, and can only have the letters a–z, 0–9, and hyphens when registering a domain name.

Subdomain

Another name, known as a subdomain, was divided with a dot on the left side of the second level domain. For instance, in this case, portal.kongunadu.ac.in is a subdomain of the kongunadu domain.

DNS Record Types

  1. A Record

For instance, 104.26.10.229, these entries resolve to IPv4 addresses.

2. AAAA Record

It resolves the IPv6 address for instance 2606:4700:20::681a:be5

3. CNAME Record

A DNS record known as a “Canonical Name” or “CNAME” record translates an alias name to a real or “canonical” domain name.

4. MX Record

Email is forwarded to a mail server through a DNS “mail exchange” (MX) record. The MX record specifies the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) routing for email messages.

5. TXT Record

Any text-based data can be stored in TXT records’ free text fields. There are several purposes for TXT records, but one popular one is to identify servers that are authorized to send emails on the domain’s behalf.
